Takshakeshwar Nath Temple
Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh · Lord Shiva
Near the Yamuna in Prayagraj stands Takshakeshwar Nath, an ancient temple of Lord Shiva woven together with one of the Mahabharata’s most dramatic stories, the tale of Takshaka, the king of serpents.
History of the Temple
Tradition says that Takshaka, fleeing the snake sacrifice of King Janamejaya, took refuge in this sacred ground under Shiva’s protection. The shivling here is counted among the oldest in the region, and the temple has been a center of naga worship for centuries.
Significance of the Temple
Because of its serpent connection, devotees come here for relief from kaal sarp dosh and for protection of the family line. In the month of Sawan the temple overflows, as kanwariyas and local devotees offer Gangajal, bilva leaves and milk to the ancient lingam. Nag Panchami is celebrated with special reverence.
