Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh · Lord Shiva (Mahakal)
Mahakal of Ujjain is the lord of time itself. Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, only Mahakaleshwar faces south, the direction of death, declaring that even death is under his rule. The city and the temple have been inseparable for thousands of years.
History of the Temple
Ancient texts sing of Mahakal’s temple in the golden age of Ujjain, the seat of King Vikramaditya. After destruction in the medieval period, the present temple was rebuilt in the eighteenth century under the Marathas, and the vast new Mahakal Lok corridor now surrounds it with sculpted grandeur.
Significance of the Temple
The temple’s signature ritual is the Bhasma Aarti before dawn, when the lingam is adorned with sacred ash to the thunder of drums and chanting, a reminder that all things end in ash and all ash rests on Shiva. Devotees book this darshan months ahead. Mahakal is also the deity of protection from untimely death, and the Mahamrityunjaya jaap performed here is sought by families across the world.
